Garry Transue: The Telluride Film Festival

The Projects

Installing the Medallions.jpgBehind the Scenes at the Telluride Film Festival
A seldom seen look at the making of the Festival by a few of the 400+ staff members as they put it together.  Though they may appear to be permanent installations, all of the elements for theatres I have designed are assembled annually for the four day event, and afterward, must be disassembled and packed away into semi tractor trailers until next year.

Chuck in Character.jpgChuck Jones' Cinema
The Telluride Convention Center at Mountain Village is home to a theatre created as an homage to Chuck Jones. A selection of his artwork, in some cases collaged, or in others, "framed" with flat printed trompe l'oeil frames, serves as decor for this environment.

auditoriumtapestry.jpgThe Galaxy Theatre
With it's abundance of sculpture and animated lighting pieces, a video montage of 180 images playing full-screen, an original soundscape, costumed dancers behind a black scrim in a mysterious shadowbox, and dozens of large-scale art pieces inspired by ancient alchemical engravings, the Galaxy is a look into the future from the distant past.  The most ambitious of my projects for the Festival to date, this theatre is a complete transformation of an elementary school gymnasium into an immersive sensory environment.

Named in honor of longtime festival advisor and cinephile Pierre Rissient, this, our smallest venue, is part french romp and part film temple.

Palm marquee and giant welcoming hands.jpgThe Palm Theater
The Palm is an homage to the festival itself, and the decor draws from over thirty years of festival history.  The design concept honors the past but seeks to reaffirm the living nature of a vibrant event, and is intended to accomodate annual additions to the environment as the festival creates its legacy.
